Moving is Easier with a Checklist
When faced with a major move, most people feel overwhelmed. Since change is a major source of stress , it’s no wonder that moving, which is the combination of a whole host of changes all at once, is one of the most stressful events in life. One way to reduce this stress is to make a checklist to organize the process. There are plenty of checklists available online that can be taken in whole or modified to suit individual needs. All will cover certain areas.
Assuming that arrangements have already been made to secure a home in the new location and to dispose of the existing home, this checklist should be about the move itself, and not about property or jobs. The first section of the checklist should consider the differences between hiring professional movers versus the DIY move. This will include items such as researching movers, securing insurance, and scheduling the move for the professional option. For the DIY set it will include hiring a truck, establishing a route and driving timeline, as well as obtaining insurance.
Next will be a section for setting up the new home. This will include things like arranging for utilities, filing a change of address and scheduling when and where to retrieve keys. People with children will need to arrange for schooling and investigate extra-curricular programs.
Packing will be the largest part of the checklist. It should include everything from obtaining packing supplies to noting items that require special containers or handling.
Lastly, there should be a section of activities during the actual move. This includes cleaning the property being left, turning in keys, if necessary, as well as things to do during the first day or two in the new property.
