Get to Know Your Home State

The United States is becoming a country of nomads. Instead of living in one town or even one neighborhood their entire lives, many Americans find themselves relocating during their lives — sometimes every few years. This may be due to a job that requires relocating in order to move up the career ladder. Other people move to be closer to loved ones, such as grandparents following a their relocated kids or long distance lovers choosing to marry and settle somewhere new.

A downside to all this relocating is that people don’t feel the same sense of attachment to their new home as they did in generations past. If you have recently relocated and are wondering how to feel a greater connection with your new home state, there are a few steps you can take.

To use a cliche, you must understand both the forest and the trees in your new home. This means that you should familiarize yourself with the big picture by studying an Ohio Wall Map and getting your hands on a book that covers the general history of the state. You’ll want to learn about the major cities, universities, schools, and landmarks that make Ohio what it is.

Next, you’ll want to get to know each of those smaller units better. Get some street maps of those big towns and go exploring. Visit specific landmarks and read more extensively about the history they represent.

It’s a major undertaking to try to truly understand your new home state, but making the effort will help you understand the place and the people better and will go a long ways to making it feel like it really is home.
